'Mapping Dance' study published
Added on 23 Jul 2007
PALATINE, the Subject Centre for Dance, Drama and Music has published the first study to map the extent to which dance provision in the HE sector develops employability and entrepreneurial skills in the student dancer. Mapping Dance quantifies and clarifies the provision that is currently being offered and, through this, identifies good practice and potential future strategy. Entrepreneurship has been an area of focus in higher education for many years, particularly since the formation of the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (who funded this study) in 2004. But there has been an emerging consensus that entrepreneurship is not just about the administrative skills needed for starting up a business; rather it is about ways of doing, seeing, feeling and communicating. Entrepreneurship is of particular relevance to graduates from creative disciplines because they are more likely to become self-employed, set up their own businesses or undertake freelance work than graduates in other disciplines. In the UK 13% of the total labour force are self-employed. In the creative sector 34% of individuals work on a self-employed basis. The project report, authored by Susanne Burns, has now been published and details of how to obtain a copy are available on the PALATINE website.
