Lab helps student Katie kick off career with the BBC

Third year student Katie Nott has landed a top job at BBC Audiobooks in Bath, thanks to skills she learnt within the Broadcast Lab. Katie will be starting her new job at the Bath based studios this month, working as a producer within the company. "[BBC Audiobooks] are the section of the BBC that make booktapes (well, bookDVDS now technically)," explains Katie. "The books are read out by professional and often well known actors and recorded in the studios in Bath. As producer, it will be my role to guide and direct the actor, in terms of the way they read the book out, the character details (gender, age, origin, defining characteristics, accent) etc, and to prepare the material to be edited correctly (gaps between chapters, retakes, mistakes and so on). It is also important to keep the actor focussed and high spirited in their reading- the recording takes place in 3 hour sessions, in fairly small studios so as you can imagine, it's quite difficult to keep interest and energy at a constant high level." Katie was able to land the job thanks to skills she gained in her Scriptwriting class, which involved a collaboration with Performing Arts students to produce radio plays using Broadcast Lab equipment. "I told them about the recording experience I had during the Scriptwriting for Radio module with Rachel Bentham and they were interested to hear about that, especially about the interaction with the actors that read out our plays in the Broadcast Lab. I also told them about all the new equipment we used, and they were dutifully impressed!" Katie is currently training with the BBC, working on James Bond and Doctor Who titles, and hopes to do well.

Good luck Katie!
