Richard White is part time lecturer in the Broadcast Lab. For the past semester he has been teaching a class with the Broadcast Media Foundation, but in the new semester he’ll be joining Mike Johnston teaching Making A Film module for 2nd Year Creative Writing students.
Richard started his career with a degree in Sociology and spending time with the early portable cameras available at his University. Getting experience from filming campaigns and generally being an activist, he then went travelling and ended up in the Sudan for two years. On his return to the UK he discovered a whole new wave of activist patriotism due to the Falkland war and jumped straight back on the bandwagon. By talking his way through, Richard got a job as stage manager with a play headed for Edinburgh Festival.
From this he floated into freelance video production work and then got a job as a researcher for the first days of Channel 4 and got stuck in with roles of producing, writing and archiving.
Richard’s main passion was to make films about real people’s ordinary lives and Channel 4 was just getting onto the idea of interviewing the general public and making cutting edge documentaries about the ‘ordinary people’s history’.
From Channel 4 Richard then went onto set up his own production company ‘Total Video’ which was linked with Weymouth Further Education Centre. Much like Artswork and Bath Spa, Richard set up the company to help the film students gain experience with real clients .
From there Richard went to Bournemouth Media school and wrote the HND Media Production course, before teaching it back in Weymouth.
With all this experience in so many areas of film production and combining companies and students, it’s not surprising he was top of the list to join the Broadcast Lab and continue his good work here.
