Find out more about the BroadcastLab

The Broadcast Lab is launching an on line magazine is being designed by student Andy Bevan, and edited by Student Fellows Matthew Bolton and Kat Davis, with MA student Jessi Gates acting as Executive Editor. Contributions by students will sit side-by-side with work by respected professional writers and film-makers to demonstrate the high quality of work being created at Bath Spa. Films, prose, audio and poetry will be presented to the wider world in an exciting digital package.

Thirty-eight students will have the chance to learn and use a range of skills in real-life film situations in The ‘Making a Film’ module . Students use professional-level equipment to produce the films, which involves administration and planning as well as technical skills. Previous films created in this module have been shown at Bath’s Little Theatre cinema as part of the Bath Film Festival. The Broadcast Lab has also attracted mentors experienced in different aspects of the industry to give guidance to the students’ films during production.

‘Broadcast Media’ is a new Foundation Degree that teaches its ten students the skills they need to be competitive in the media industry. Modules on this course include ‘Working with Video’, ‘Working with Audio’ and ‘Making a Media Production’. The Broadcast Lab’s facilities enable students to work with high level industrial hardware and software to learn to create professional-level film and audio artefacts.

Stand Out from the Crowd, or SoftC is the video production society which encourages students from core Humanities curriculum to learn to use the various equipment offered by the Lab. This media literacy society enables students to add film and audio skills and artefacts to their portfolios. Students have taken various roles on different productions, and are now working collaboratively on a large project.

Recently, The Script-a-thon team, a touring improvisational script and performance team, made a film at the Broadcast Lab. Kevin Chapman, Shaun Brill, Richard Hattersley and Tom Harrod ran the Script-a-thon, and the show was filmed by Student Fellow Matthew Bolton and SoftC member Millie Reading, and was edited by Tom to showcase The Script-a-thon team.

In December, Broadcast Lab staff and students collaborated with their counterparts in the Music Lab to produce music videos for artists on the Commercial Music course. Professional director Nikky Smedley helped to choreograph and plan the videos, which were filmed in the new University Theatre. A variety of equipment was used to give each of the videos its own unique feel, including the use of vision mixers and the stage’s projection screen. The videos were completed by the bands, and released on YouTube
