Senior Teaching Fellow presents a paper at the ASET conference

Dr. Mimi Thebo, Artswork BroadcastLab Senior Teaching Fellow, has recently returned from the UK’s annual Placement and Employability Professional’s Conference where she ran a workshop ‘Placements without Places: Supporting Freelance Work Experience.’
The conference took place at Lancaster University. Delegates from all over the UK and Europe gathered to hear keynote speakers and to present and attend workshops on the current issues in the sector of work-based and placement learning and employability.
Mimi’s presentation explored the idea that in today’s shifting and volatile employment landscape, many students (and new graduates) need to function as sole practitioners if they are to get the experience they need to succeed in their chosen field.
Artswork is concerned with employability in the Creative Industry and has been investigating and supporting this kind of work-based learning for several years. In her presentation, Dr Mimi Thebo used a multi-media presentation that dealt with both practical elements and reflective assessments in placements without places.
Using film, slides and handouts, Dr Thebo shared insights at institutional level and from several subjects (including Art and Design, Music, English Literature, Fashion and Textile Design, Creative Writing and Media), providing information on curriculum design, assessments, health and safety, and student support. The voices of students, placement officers, faculty and careers advisors were represented and various proformas and documents were available to investigate for use, as Bath Spa related its experience of supporting freelancing students.
